About Southeast Asia Anti-Corruption Conference “Recalling Jakarta Statement”

The Southeast Asia Anti-Corruption Conference: Recalling Jakarta Statement was held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre. It brought together anti-corruption agencies, NGOs, as well as media from Southeast Asia and beyond to reaffirm their commitment to effective and independent anti-corruption agencies.

Representatives from eight Southeast Asian countries and Mongolia participated alongside international bodies like IACA, IAACA, UNODC, and UNDP. The event also welcomed NGOs and media, underscoring the importance of inclusive collaboration.

The conference centered on the Jakarta Statement (2012), which outlines 16 key principles to strengthen anti-corruption institutions. Sessions included country reflections, civil society perspectives, and a high-level expert dialogue on applying the Jakarta Statement across the region.

The conference agenda consist of:

A presentation on Realizing the Jakarta Statement’s Potential in the Region by Samuel A. De Jaegere (IACA)

  • Session 1: Country Reflections from Anti-Corruption Agencies, in which representatives from mention countries shared their experiences and current state of corruption in their respective jurisdictions
  • Session 2: Perspectives from Civil Society on Implementing the Jakarta Statement & Open Floor Reflections: Participants Engagement, where civil society representatives discussed various perspectives on implementing the Jakarta Statement
  • Session 3: High Level Expert Dialogue: Realizing the Jakarta Statement in Southeast Asia, featuring Martin Kreutner, Annika Whytes (UNODC), Wong Wai Kit (IAACA), Samuel A. De Jaegere (IACA). In this final session, the experts discussed how the principles of the Jakarta Statement are being implemented across different Southeast Asian countries.
  • Closing Remarks by Ketua Setiausaha Negara, YBhg. Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar emphasized Malaysia’s firm commitment to broad governance reforms to restore public trust and enhance integrity. He outlined priorities including transparency, accountability, public finance, procurement, corporate governance, law enforcement, and legal reforms.

A key outcome of the conference was the Putrajaya Declaration, reaffirming participants’ commitment to Jakarta Statement, particularly the importance of agency independence, sufficient resources, and engagement with civil society and media.

The conference closed with a networking dinner, fostering regional cooperation and shared dedication to transparency, accountability, and integrity.
