SEA ACTIONS Statement on Paulus Tannos’ Legal Maneuvers and Extradition Proceedings

  • SEA ACTIONS
  • • 3 June 2025
A A
Paulus Tannos

Regarding the legal resistance efforts by Paulus Tannos, SEA ACTIONS presents the following chronological perspective:

  • Paulus Tannos has pursued legal action since his arrest by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) in January 2025, conducted at the request of the Indonesian government.
  • Currently, in addition to opposing extradition, Tannos is also seeking release on bail.
  • The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has declared its intention to challenge Tannos’s legal efforts.
In late May 2025, KPK had planned to summon Tannos for a voluntary examination. However, Tannos requested the process be conducted informally, a proposal that was rejected by KPK.
  • A committal hearing is scheduled for June 23-24, 2025, to determine the status of Tannos’s extradition.

Based on the above chronology, SEA ACTIONS presents the following position:

First, we believe that the Singaporean judiciary and law enforcement authorities are firmly committed to rejecting bail and supporting the extradition of Paulus Tannos. This commitment was demonstrated by CPIB’s swift action in detaining Tannos on January 17, 2025. This case is a critical test of Singapore’s extradition commitments, particularly given its high Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) score and the nature of the crime involved—corruption in the form of bribery, which is universally recognized as a serious offense. The legitimacy of the legal process would be called into question if Tannos’s request were granted.

Second, it is essential that KPK maintain its commitment and consistency in resolving this case. KPK had already attempted to examine Tannos in late May 2025, but his demand for an informal process was rightly rejected. We view KPK’s decision as appropriate, given the need for this case to be handled with transparency and accountability. What matters now is KPK’s ability to act swiftly and decisively in response to Tannos’s legal strategies, ensuring this case reaches a thorough and just resolution.

Respectfully,

Praswad Nugraha
